How To Dispose Of...
The big question for every ocean-friendly product is how to correctly dispose of it. We've got your questions answered.
First and foremost...
How to Read Labels
Organic
Certified Organic products must have an ingredient list that is 95% organic. Meaning it is made and produced without artificial colors, artificial fragrances, GMO, fertilizers, synthetic chemical preservatives and all other toxins.
Recyclable
Things labeled recyclable typically include plastic, paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, and glass. Keep an eye on the number associated with the recycling symbol to ensure you can put it in your blue bin to be recycled by a local facility.
Biodegradable
Biodegradable products can be broken down by microorganisms in the soil. For instance, paper and textiles are biodegradable, whereas conventional plastics are not. Not all biodegradable products can be composted.
Compostable
Compostable products are made to break down into simple more natural components over time. Backyard vs. industrial compost is typically the difference between composting at home versus in a large facility that applies high temperatures to speed up the breakdown process.

Mailers + Packaging
A majority of our vendors use shipping supplies that are either compostable, made using 100% recycled materials, or recyclable. Here's how you can dispose of them:
Compostable
These mailers are typically made using a corn-based bioplastic. Remove any labels and compost it (in a pile or industrial composter).
100% Recycled
This is made using 100% post-consumer recycled material. This material is difficult to recycle again .
Paper/Cardboard
These are often made from post-consumer recycled material and are curbside pick-up recyclable.
Overall, the the more plastic-free the packaging (even if it's bioplastic), the more ocean-friendly. All plastic- tape, labels, and plastic-wrap must be removed before recycling and/or composting.
